The IRS provides detailed instructions and access to forms that enable you to apply for a federal EIN (Employer Identification Number). You can apply online, by telephone, by FAX, by mail, and in person at a local office.

Apply online: Go to the Internet EIN application on the IRS Web site apply for an EIN online.

Apply by phone: Call Business & Specialty Tax Line at (800) 829-4933 between 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday.

Apply by FAX or by mail: Complete a Form SS-4 and FAX the completed form to your state FAX number or mailing address (see Where to File - Business Forms and Filing Addresses). Be sure that the Form SS-4 contains all of the required information.

Apply in person at a local office: To locate a local office, visit the Contact a Local Office page on the IRS Web site.
