Downloading tax products from ProSeries.com


The instructions in this section explain how to download then install ProSeries federal and state tax products from www.proseries.com.

Important:
If ProSeries software is already installed on your system, we suggest that you use the Update Installed Products/Download New Products command on the ProSeries Help menu instead of your browser to get ProSeries tax products. When you use this command instead of your browser:
  • Connection time is shorter because only necessary components are downloaded (instead of the entire product).
  • All applicable products and updates are downloaded during one connection. (If you use your browser, you have to download each product separately.)
  • Installation is automatic. (If you use your browser, you have to locate the executable file that you downloaded, and then run a separate installation procedure).

When going online to download ProSeries tax products, you must complete the two-step process:

  1. Download the new product, then
  2. Install the new product.

Downloading a tax product from ProSeries.com

To download a ProSeries tax product from ProSeries.com:

  1. Stand-alone. If you installed ProSeries software for stand-alone use, go to that computer.

    2. Network. If you installed ProSeries software for network use, go to the ProSeries Admin workstation.

  2. On the computer’s hard disk, create a temporary directory named C:\TEMP (if the directory doesn’t already exist).

    3. If you need assistance creating a temporary directory, refer to your Windows user’s guide or Windows on-screen help.

  3. Open your Web browser and go to http://www.proseries.com.
  4. From the ProSeries.com home page, select Login to My ProSeries.
  5. In the Order Status table on your My ProSeries home page, go to the Download column on the far right side, then click the Get File link on the same line for the product that you want.
  6. Read the instructions on the next page that appears, note the name of the .EXE file for the product that you are downloading, then click the name of the product.
  7. In the Save As dialog box, select the C:\TEMP temporary directory that you created.
  8. Click Save.

    9. The .EXE file for the product is downloaded. The Saving Location dialog box shows the download progress. When the .EXE file is completely downloaded, the dialog box disappears and you see the ProSeries.com Software Download page.

  9. Exit ProSeries.com and your Web browser.

Tip:
To purchase and download ProSeries tax products, click Buy Online near the top of a ProSeries.com page, then follow the instructions on the ProSeries Store pages. You will have the option to download your products when you get to the Order Confirmation page.

Installing a downloaded tax product

To install a ProSeries tax product after you’ve downloaded it from ProSeries.com:

  1. Stand-alone. If you installed ProSeries software for stand-alone use, go to that computer and make sure the ProSeries program isn’t running.

    2. Network. If you installed ProSeries software for network use, make sure the ProSeries program isn’t running on any workstation, then go to the ProSeries Admin workstation and make sure the ProSeries program isn’t running.

  2. Go to Windows Explorer, then locate the .EXE file that you downloaded to the C:\TEMP directory.
  3. Double-click the .EXE file.

    4. The ProSeries installation program starts.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

    5. During installation, the installation program creates disk directories named Disk 1, Disk 2, and so on.

  5. After the product is installed, you may want to copy the contents of the disk directories to floppy disks or to other removable storage devices for backup purposes.
  6. To free up space and avoid confusion, go to Windows Explorer. On the File menu, use the Delete command to delete the disk directories from your hard disk.
  7. Repeat the process for other ProSeries products that you want to download from ProSeries.com.
